Description
(All text, heading, information and photographs within this listing are the intellectual property and copyright of; riversidemaximus23 and was written by myself and not AI) Let me start by saying this watch is extremely rare (not a word I use often) - Aaron Lufkin Dennison was one of the founding Fathers of the American Waltham Watch Co., who moved to England from the U.S.A in 1872 to establish the Dennison Watch Case Company in Handsworth, England. They made cases for all the top watch manufacturers of the era including Rolex and Omega - however I have never come across a movement and dial which is also stamped; 'Dennison Watch Case Co' - suspect he imported them from Switzerland and had stamped with his Company name - wonder if this was a prototype /own brand movement to see if they would sell well - we will never know. Gentleman's original Antique Dennison high grade 15 jewel pocket watch in a highly polished 10 carat (stamped) rose gold filled (has a lovely soft pink hue and known in the UK as rolled gold) full hunter case. It looks to have been much loved and very well cared for - her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! Dial:- Impressive and distinctive, high gloss 'ivory' porcelain dial in very near mint condition - absolutely no hairlines or nibbles and just one extremely tiny (micro) little black 'spec' showing under eyeglass below number 11 which looks to be a fault in the original firing process (does not detract in any way but mentioning for accuracy). Signed clearly in black enamel script; Dennison W.C.Co with Swiss Made in arched black script to base of dial. Bold black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder 5 minute markers and 'diamond' shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring. Recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut original bright blued steel spade and whip hands and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight, unmarked order. Hunter crystal in clear, bright condition with just one or 2 tiny marks as to be expected. Case:- The highly polished (5cm diameter / 7cm from top of bow to base), 10 carat (stamped) rose gold filled full hunter case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a hefty 111.6 grams), robust and in outstanding condition - absolutely no wear, one small indentation to circumference between the 12 - 1 position and few very light and fine little overall surface scratches (showing under eyeglass and usually caused by carrying the watch in a pocket with loose coins and other objects jangling around) commensurate with age and use in her 105 years service. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. The front cover is hinged at the nine position, opens correctly to exactly 90 degrees when the winder is depressed, closing tightly with a very reassuring click (always depress the winder when closing to save wear to the gold and also the catch) and the large hinge is true and firm with absolutely no play. The back cover and dust cover again are hinged at the 9 position, both open correctly to exactly 90 degrees, closing with a very reassuring click and the hinges are true and firm. Clearly numbered to the inside of the front cover; 576769 xx and this is correctly, partially repeated to the back case cuvette and the underside of the bezel lip; 6769. The inside of the back cover is stamped; Moon (the Dennison 'Moon' cases where always 10ct gold filled), Trade Mark A.L.D Dennison Watch Case Co., and has their trade symbols of a sun, star and crescent moon to centre. Again correctly numbered; 576769. Stamped to the inside of the dust cover in arch script; English Make Guaranteed To Be Made Of Two Plates Of 10CT Gold With Plate Of Composition Between And To Wear 20 Years. Numbered; 576769 19 - the 19 is the Dennison date numbering system; 1919. Interestingly I can see no old service marks to the inside of either of the covers which again leads me to think this watch has had very little use. Movement:- The stem wound and set Dennison high grade 15 ruby jewelled, 3/4 fire gilt plate Swiss lever movement (size; 16) is in lovely bright and clean order (tiny bit of age patina to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers) and as mentioned above has just been fully checked and serviced. Has a bi arm / bi metal expansion balance with red gold balance screws and four steel meantime screws (for precision timing), blued steel overcoil balance spring (which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well), large ruby jewels in red gold, screwed in sunken chaton settings, ruby end stone and pallet jewels, engraved balance cock, micro metric swan neck screw adjustment regulator (which as mentioned earlier is sat correctly in the central position), 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and steel case screws. Clearly stamped on the top plates in arched script; Dennison W.C.Co., and has a low serial number; 5011. Stamped to the bottom plate (side of the balance assembly); Swiss Made and is numbered to the top plate (under the dial) again with a low serial number; 366. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action. Runs like a train! Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely large un-worn rose gold filled 'onion' crown. Good original slightly worn (little bit of wear to top underside only from being carried on a watch chain) big rose gold filled Dennison safety bow which is correctly stamped to one side; Dq - Dennison Quality. Appraisal:- A very handsome and extremely rare Gentleman's Antique full hunter Dennison timepiece which as mentioned above was much loved and very well cared for by the original owner (looks to have had very little use, perhaps only high days and holidays) - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
