Description
We have a very, very similar striking couple of Rowley Gallery modernist chests of drawers in oak c.1930. We are great admirers of these two with their simple lines, easy on the eye design and of course they are oak. The chests are the same in design, one being a little higher than the other so could work very well together. The Rowley Gallery was established in 1898 at 6 High Road, Silver Street, Kensington. In 1909, Silver Street was renamed, and although remaining in the same premises, the new address became 140 Church Street. Albert Rowley and his wife Emma founded the business in the first year of their marriage, when it specialised in picture framing, mounting, restoration, carving, gilding and exhibitions of paintings. Before very long The Rowley Gallery was also producing inlaid wood panels and furniture and by 1912 had expanded to include 142 Church Street. Rowley's son Laurence, an enthusiastic furniture designer, joined the firm in the mid-1920s. The Rowley Gallery, now not in the ownership of the Rowley family, is still trading at 115 Kensington Church Street. Condition wise they are good with the odd wear mark with drawers running well. We have the Rowley label to the inside of the top drawers and they are ready to place. Price is for one cabinet delivered, not the pair! A very good looking chest of drawers. Billy Hunt has successfully focused on British furniture and lighting since 2014 and always has an interesting ever changing selection of carefully chosen pieces from the early 1800s to late 1970s. Our base is a large Victorian 2 storey red brick barn on a wonderful traditionally run country estate in Staffordshire.
