Description
Beautiful and well-proportioned matching pair of late Victorian Doulton & Slater’s Patent Stoneware vases, from Royal Doulton’s famous Lambethware works at Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. Born in 1844, John Slater studied at the world-renown ‘Stoke-on-Trent School of Design’, before becoming the famous Art Director at Royal Doulton’s subsidiary company “Doulton & Co.” from 1887 through to his death in 1914. As part of his important role, Slater was engaged with the introduction and development of a specialist and Patented ceramic rendering technique universally known as the “Doulton & Slaters Patent." This was a skilled hand-worked process that involved pressing fabrics into the surfaces of wet clay, in order to form exclusive and uniquely creative patterns / designs in that clay. Then, once the clay had dried sufficiently, the fabrics were carefully removed, and the resultant impressions left in the clay were hand-painted, enamelled, and fired, as would have been the process with this very impressive pair of decorative, scarce and marked vases. The centrally impressed floral designed artwork on these two vases, are painted in gold gilt, white, turquoise and brown, whilst the contrasting vase shoulders and base, are finished in a superb enamelled deep blue with gold gilt finish.
