Arthur John Lesley became significant during the mid-19th century because of his genre paintings featuring happy family life, which became extremely popular in England during this time. Wealthy middle class families enjoyed the genre paintings that depicted scenes of beautifully dressed young children playing with their pets in happy settings, which is what the artist Arthur John Elsley provided them.

These paintings became so popular and in demand that many were reproduced as prints and used in calendars, adverts, books and magazines.
