Description
( The brown shades / reflection on engraving is the photography ) A large 19c engraving by Landseer after Sir Edwin Henry Landseer in original frame, that would look very smart in any hallway, sitting room or dining room. The subject is of two St Bernards dogs with an avalanche victim, one tries to revive him while the other alerts the rescue party. The engraving comes from the well known original painting called "Alpine Mastiffs Reanimating a Traveller," which is by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, that was exhibited at the British institution in 1820 when he was just 18 years old. The original picture is currently at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. I believe it is not on display. Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA was born: 7 March 1802 - Died: 1 Oct 1873 and is buried in St Paul’s Cathedral. He was an English painter and sculptor and was one of the finest Victorian artists of animals of his time. Particularly horses, dogs and stags. However his best known works are the lion sculptures at the base of Nelson’s column, London. Due to this he ended up getting various commissions from Queen Victoria. One of his most famous Scottish works he did was “The Monarch of the Glen." This picture was completed in 1851 and now hangs in the National Galleries of Scotland.
