Description
Step back in time with this exceptional early 18th-century 30-hour lantern clock by Richard Rayment of St. Edmunds Bury. Crafted between 1710 and 1715, this piece is a masterpiece of horological engineering and artistry, embodying the skill and innovation of one of Suffolk’s most respected clockmaker. This clock stands out for its rare half-hour striking mechanism, an uncommon and intricate feature for lantern clocks of this period. The half-hour striking required precise engineering to balance the power between timekeeping and striking—an innovation seldom seen in similar clocks of the era. Its verge and crown wheel escapement pairs beautifully with an anchor-shaped pendulum, visible through original side doors designed with decorative apertures and applied “wings” to enhance the pendulum’s aesthetic movement. The original alarm train is also intact and fully functional, further adding to its rarity and charm. The chapter ring bears the signature and location in Richard Rayment’s early engraving style, positioned adjacent to the numeral six, marking it as an early example of his work. Later pieces by Rayment shifted this detail to the top sector of the dial plate below the numeral twelve, making this clock a true testament to his evolving design style. Richard Rayment (1686–1754) was the most esteemed member of the renowned Rayment clockmaking dynasty, whose innovative work influenced the craft for generations. This clock, in wonderful original condition, is a shining example of his skill, ingenuity, and dedication to creating lasting masterpieces. Fully functional and beautifully preserved, this lantern clock is a rare opportunity to own a piece of horological history. Perfect for collectors and connoisseurs of antique timepieces, it offers a glimpse into the artistry and precision of early 18th-century craftsmanship. Secure this timeless treasure and celebrate the legacy of one of England’s most influential clockmaker. Serviced and guaranteed for 3 years.
