Description
Flint was known to be fond of the scenery of his native land. Flint himself noted "I suppose I have painted more Scottish landscapes than anything else, and I never paint anything with greater pleasure. We once spent a glorious autumn in the highlands, six weeks of perfect painting weather from the start of October to mid-November. The trees, rowan, beech, birch and oak, became more and more autumnal till all was a blaze of vermilion and gold. A lot of work was done there. I think I painted forty watercolours".
The painting measures 8" x 11". The frame measures 18" x 21"
Sir William Russell Flint Ra, Roi, was undoubtedly the finest watercolour artist of his time. He is famed for his remarkable technical skill and precision. Born in Edinburgh in 1880 he was educated at the Edinburgh Institution, the Heatherley School of Fine Art and the Royal Institute of Art, later studying independently at the British Museum. He became President of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1936.
Today, Flints work is included in numerous private and civic collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
Flint died in London on 30th December, 1969 at the age of 89, a celebrated figure.
