Description
A most attractive Mid / Late 19th Century Antique English Victorian Copper Kitchen Mould of seamed construction, bearing the impressed mark of an Orb and Cross, the Maker's Mark of Benham and Froude (1855 - 1906), of Chandos Street, London, together with the impressed numerals 614.
Originally founded in 1785 by John Kepp, the famous "Orb" was adopted as a trademark, because in 1821 the firm made the present cross on the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral, 23 feet high and weighing seven tons, and this could be seen from their London shop. For a more comprehensive history of this firm, see the article, "The Sign of the Orb and Cross", by Jeremy T. Stedman, (Antique Collecting ~ Vol. 16 ~ No. 9, published in February 1982.
