Description
Very attractive Victorian solid silver shield fob or pendant with compass hallmarked for Birmingham 1889. Solid silver shield watch fob or pendant inset with hand-decorated compass with frosted yellow dial marked with cardinals and intercardinals, fleur de lys indicating north, and polished reflector ring. Blued steel needle suspended on jewelled pivot. Deeply bevelled glass. The silver surround with intricate pierced and stamped design. Fully hallmarked for sterling silver, anchor for Birmingham, date letter "p" for 1889, and maker "T&D." The compass swinging freely, finding north easily. The glass with surface scratches (a jeweller may well be able to polish these out), the silver shield in generally very good antique condition, the verso with marks and wear commensurate with age and use. The high quality compass is almost certainly the work of Francis Barker, the preeminent maker of compasses at that time. A wonderful gift for an anniversary, birthday or Christmas.
