Description
Early 20th Century Large French Black Grape Hod French 20th Century 1900-20 Châteauneuf-du-Pape commune Grand Scale model Leather, Metal, Paint, Hand-Painted Original back straps are still present, with some chapping and fleabites to the leather Later painted Châteauneuf-du-Pape crest display Painted elements were added more recently with some minor rubs Wear consistent with age and use Minor scratches and buildup Light and minor indentations Good antique condition Oxidation and buildup to interior, commensurate with age and use Would be a spectacular addition as a focal point or conversation piece This decorative Hotte would make a wonderful accessory in a wine room etc Amazing look when used for logs/kindling storage Fantastic feature wine/drink coolers for parties and Bbq’s etc This style of galvanised French Grape Hod or hotte was used at French vineyards and was worn on the back of the workers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when harvesting grapes. The vineyard employee would attach the Hotte to his/her back (via the leather straps seen in the photos) and place the harvested grapes directly into the container. This black Hotte has a hand-painted coat of arms flanked by the phrase “Châteauneuf-du-Pape” (in gold letters). The coat of arms depicts two crossed keys entwined in a curled ribbon that emanates from the base of a closed crown. The ovate crown has been adorned with gold beading and fleur de lys and is topped with a cross pattee (cross with narrowing arms and flat sides). Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most renowned appellations (Appellation d'origine contrôlée - Aoc) of the southern part in the Rhône Valley, Rhône wine region in southeastern France and its vineyards are located around Châteauneuf-du-Pape commune and neighbouring villages, Bédarrides, Courthézon and Sorgues, between Avignon and Orange. Most of the cultivable land has been used for planting grapes, which are used to produce a well-known red wine appellation.
