Description
SALE - WAS £2,200 NOW £1,700 A large and fine early 19th century oil on canvas study of a young boy riding his pony in a country paddock with his terrier running alongside by Francis Calcraft Turner who was best known for horse portraits, horse racing genre and portrait painting. The majority of Turner's hunting scenes show hunts from the South of England including the Essex Hounds, the East Kent and the Old Berkeley and he was also a noted regular contributor to the 19th century 'Sporting Magazine' providing no less than 78 works. In 1828, he wrote ''I have rode to more hounds... and my knowledge of racing, shooting and coursing, etc. than any artist in existence'' Highly sought after, his works now hang in many museums including The British Museum, Liverpool Museum and The National Horse Racing Museum etc. The present good-sized work offered has been professionally cleaned and re-lined (resultantly with the oil in very good overall order) and is housed in a 20th century period style giltwood frame that compliments the Painting perfectly. The work is signed and dated lower left 1836 and the subject boy clearly looks upon the viewer in a privileged position displaying status and wealth and most probably rides through his family's estate. The painting will be shipped Asap to the purchaser and if resident within the UK, will incur no shipping charges. Please do feel free to ask any questions or for any further information required.
