Description
A rare fine English George I (c.1720) antique bachelor chest of drawers in black American walnut with fold-over top. Excellent original colour and patina and great compact proportions. The solid walnut baize-lined top opens to provide either a games top or writing surface. Supported by two retractable lopers, either side of the two cock beaded pine lined drawers. Below a further three long graduated drawers, supported on bracket feet. The chest retains most of its original brasses (repaired). Other than a few repairs this chest is original throughout.
A piece of very good quality, with a compact width 29" (74cm)
The term “bachelor chest” is used to describe a slim walnut or mahogany chest with this type of folder-over top. This term is now used more generally used to describe a small chest of drawers. Early original walnut and mahogany versions of this chest are rare, with some versions commanding very high prices.
