Description
Large antique oak court cupboard, sideboard with panelled top, made in the early 1800s, probably (though possibly earlier) with some later, Victorian modifications maybe. Rather an amazing piece to be fair, and of a warmer, lighter oak brown than a lot of similar pieces. The base has three cupboards with three drawers above, all highly carved with quite rustic looking green man and sea monster (or dragon?) motifs. Original hand made brass handles and escutcheons. Large globe feet below. On the top there is a panelled upstand, again highly carved, with shelf supported by turned pillars. This part comes off and the base could be used separately as a sideboard: it just has two holes where the pillars locate (see pics).

condition
condition
Condition is pretty good for the age: structurally it's solid and heavy; quite sound. There's wear in the drawer runners but they run fine. None of the locks have keys but there are old handmade turn buttons to keep the doors shut. The floor is quite bowed in the side cupboards and has had worm in the left (we shall be reinforcing that side, underneath); we've treated any dubious looking areas but there's no sign of life, it's all historic stuff and not structural apart from that one bit. The middle floor looks like it was replaced 50-100 years ago. The top has a little bit of movement in it but nothing serious, especially when it's screwed on to the base and against a wall. Both ends have a split in them though there's negligible movement; they're made of one large piece of oak which has shrunk; a good indicator of the age. Cosmetically there are many areas of darker colours; scuffs, dings, lumps and so on..this really is what you'd expect (and probably want) in this sort of period piece.
