Highly important late 17th or early 18th Century Dutch marquetry side table of exceptional quality.
This wonderful table has an overhanging rectangular top above a frieze with shaped apron to the front. It has four barley twist legs that lead to a platform stretcher and stands on bun feet. The quality of the decoration is quite exceptional. The frieze, top and even the centre of the stretcher are inlaid with star motifs in ivory, the marquetry being very cleanly laid and beautifully designed. The top of the table incorporates star motifs and countless inlaid geometric motifs to the moulded edge. Additionally, the top is decorated with inlaid overlapping semi circular motifs made from various contrasting woods and highlighted with further ivory stringing. The marquetry and parquetry is of outstanding quality and this is one of the very finest examples we have ever been privileged enough to handle. The turning of the legs is also exceptional, the graceful way that they taper towards the stretcher being beautifully executed.
An interesting feature of this table is the use of ormolu mounts for the two front legs, the casting and chasing of these mounts is wonderful. This is a one of the finest tables of its kind that exists.
