Description
This rural, and rustic six plank elm coffer has a 'V' cut fretwork designed side which forms an early 1600s leg design that was a fairly common and simple design back in the day. This example has a lock plate and once would have had a key, sadly long gone now. However, it has still is the original till or candle box as it is also known as. These simple coffers housed your only valuables and possessions, so became an important piece of furniture in the home.
The six-plank coffer is one of the simplest and oldest designs for storage chests, popular from medieval times through the 1700s and often associated with rural or rustic furniture traditions. Its design and construction are straightforward, relying on six flat wooden planks (hence the name) and simple joinery techniques.
Simple Structure: As the name suggests, a six-plank coffer consists of six main wooden panels: one each for the top, bottom, back, front, and two sides. The simplicity of this design was practical, allowing for easy assembly and minimal tools.
I think these early basic designs were simple and the easiest to make with simple tools. But now they are some of the most desirable pieces of early furniture you can acquire and so sought after and becoming rarer to find.
