Description
SALE - WAS £290 NOW £220 This is an original late 19th Century (c.1895) antique cast iron novelty 'mechanical' money box, 'Football Bank' by J. (John) Harper & Co. The novelty money box is in original untouched and unrestored condition and due to its almost 130 years, exhibits some surface oxidization as expected and commensurate with age (please view the many images supplied).
The footballer's right leg is spring loaded and pulled back to a small catch behind which when released, will propel the leg/foot to kick a pre-placed coin (locating on the circular angular stand in front) to the horizontal slot in the 'net fronted' bank, hopefully!, (there is a certain amount of skill/slight adjustment enabling the coin to enter the central slot when kicked!).
The heavy, cast iron bank bears the impressed registration number 247326 to the underside which marks it as totally original.
It is worth noting that in February 2017, an almost identical version (lot no. 190) was sold by auction at Sworders Auctioneers, Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex for a hammer price of £920 which, when buyer's premium and Vat is added, equates to around £1,200. Please see image posted in this listing detailing this auction sale result or research on Sworders website.
Some small traces of the paintwork can still be seen upon close inspection (please see images) and this scarce and original bank is offered at a very reasonable price indeed, priced to sell, perhaps to somebody who might restore the piece?
As ever, please feel free to email any questions or ask for any further information required.
