A fine oil on canvas by the highly regarded landscape painter Joseph Vincent Nicholas Francis Weiss 1859-1919. The painting is superbly worked in thick oils and wonderfully captures a bright sunny day casting shadows in a Sussex Village. The work is signed to the lower right Jose Weiss. Weiss was born in Paris in 1859, the son of John Frederick Francis Weiss a German from Alsace and Sylvie Marie Josephine Talbot who had an English background. He grew up in France developing a passion for painting, but he only became an artist after a painting holiday in West Sussex. He decided to stay in England and make a living from painting and soon took up residence at Houghton House in the village of Houghton, Arundel, Sussex. In August 1899 he became a naturalized British subject and remained living and painting in Houghton for the rest of his life. He was a prolific and great painter of English landscapes in the style of the Barbizon School, learnt from his early life in France, mostly depicting scenes of the Sussex countryside. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists and at the Paris Salon where he received an honourable mention, and sold his paintings to a wide group of admirers, particularly in the United States. His work is on view in galleries and museums in both countries. He was a passionate early pioneer of aviation particularly working with gliders, he lectured regularly at the Royal Aeronautical Society in the early 20th century and received a posthumous award in the King's Honours List in 1929. This work is a particularly good example of his art with a wonderful bright colour palette. The painting is in excellent condition and retains an old gallery label on the reverse with the title of the work. The substantial frame has all the original gilding and the whole has a great decorative impact. C.1900.
