This absolutely wonderful 1960's off white Grp hallstand with articulated hooks and umbrella holders was designed by renowned Italian interior and industrial designer Giancarlo Piretti who has made significant contributions to furniture design. Piretti joined Italian design company Castelli as an interior designer in the 1960s. During his time at Castelli, he obtained numerous industrial patents for his chair designs.
This fabulous hallstand signed to the bottom G.C Piretti, Castelli really has got quite the history for its age! The hallstand’s design reflects Piretti’s innovative approach to functional furniture Interestingly, it is associated with the Tv series “Space 1999”, which adds a unique touch to its history.
Giancarlo Piretti was born in 1940 in Bologna, Italy, and studied drawing at the Art Institute of Bologna and continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna in 1960. From 1963 to 1970, he taught interior design at the Art Institute of Bologna. Piretti’s work has left a lasting impact on furniture design, combining functionality and aesthetics.
During his time at Castelli, he obtained numerous industrial patents for his chair designs. His most famous creation is the Plia Chair (1968), a plastic folding chair that has sold over seven million copies since 1969 and is still in production. The Plia Chair won several awards and can be found in museums worldwide. Other notable designs by Piretti include the Dorsal ergonomic seating system (1981) and the Torsion Seating Collection (1995-96).
Space: 1999 was a British Sci-Fi Tv programme that ran from 1975-1977 over 2 series; set in the future - 1999 in fact! - all the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha are hurtling around uncontrollably into space. It was the last production by husband and wife team Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and was said to be the most expensive series for British Tv with a budget of £6.8 million. The first series was jointly produced by Itc Entertainment and the Italian Broadcaster Rai; the second was produced entirely by Itc.
