This is a wonderfully matched pair of English campaign chests made in the later part of the 19th Century and were reputedly owned by Sir Albert Edward Whitaker when he was a serving military officer.
Sir Albert Edward Whitaker Cbe was born in Babworth, Nottinghamshire and fought in the Afghan wars (1870-1890) gaining the rank of Captain in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He served during the First World War and was Mentioned in Dispatches. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (Td) and in 1919 was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (Cbe). He also held the office of Justice of the Peace (Jp) for Nottinghamshire, the office of Deputy Lieutenant (Dl) of Nottinghamshire and in 1921 he held the office of High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and was also the Lord High Steward of East Retford. He was appointed Knight in 1928 and he was created 1st Baronet Whitaker, of Babworth, co. Nottingham (UK) on 15 July 1936. In 1936 he was also made Honorary Colonel of the Sherwood Rangers from 1936 until his death in 1945.
