Pair of fine art posthumous portraits oil paintings on canvas Ernest Akroyd Kinnear & Wife Marcia Ellen Cissie Crosbie c.1939, signed by the British artist Edmond Dyer. Subject dual portraits of a man and wife in front facing profile she is an elegant beautiful young lady with rosy cheeks and blue eyes, curly short strawberry blonde hair wearing a smart mustard and black formal dress, with a brooch onby her neck. He has brown eyes, short receding darker blonde hair and is wearing a black suite and white shirt, he has rosy cheeks has a moustache, masculine jaw line and nose to match. The posthumous portrait was adopted from European traditions of portraying the dead as alive. These posthumous portraits became a genre all their own by transforming the dead back into life through this medium. With the Kinnear family crest coat of arms shown on the gentlemen Ernest painting & latin inscription spem fortuna alit which translates to Fortune nourishes hope. Provenance Edinburgh label verso. Biography of the Husband Ernest Ackroyd Kinnear J.P 1860-1910. He was born in Torquay, Devon, England in 1910. Only Surviving Son of Rev George Kinnear and Harriet (Ackroyd) Kinnear Brother of Thomas George Kinnear. Husband of Marcia (Crosby) Kinnear — married 2 Jun 1886 in Parish Church, Ballyheigne, Kerry, Irelandmap. Descendants Father of Ronald Crosbie Kinnear and Vera Harriet (Kinnear) Daniel. Died 20 Apr 1910 at age 50 in Denny Street, Tralee, Kerry, Ireland. Biography of the Lady Wife Marcia Ellen Crosbie 1866-1937 Aged 19 Wife of Ernest Ackroyd Kinnear and 1st daughter of Col James Crosbie 6th of Ballyheigue by his wife Rosa Lister - Kaye of Denby. The surname Kinnear origin was from Scotland. According to the early recordings of the spellings of the name Kinnear, this interesting and unique name was listed in many forms such as Kinnar, Kinner, and the more common Kinnear, this is a Scottish surname of early old origin. It is geographical from the place called Kinneir in the division of Fife near the hamlet of Wormit. The place name first noted at the starting of the 13th cntury as “Kyner,” from the Gaelic word “ceann,” which means head(land) and “iar,” to the west. The original family who took the name were servants of the ancestors of St. Andrews and held their estates until the starting of the 18th Century.
