The watch has a high grade stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement has been identified as being by LeCoultre. We have had sight of identical movements which carry the brevet (patent) number 34029. This relates to a 1905 patent, applicant d’Horlogerie Le Coultre & Cie, relating to the ‘instant counter perfected for chronograph timepieces’.
LeCoultre went on to become Jaeger LeCoultre in 1937 following a collaboration between Edmond Jaeger and LeCoultre.
The split second chronograph is also known as the rattrapante. The rattrapante is a chronograph movement with an additional seconds hand for the chronograph function superimposed over the normal seconds hand and an additional pusher.
The winding crown is pushed to set both hands moving round. The extra button (at 2 o’clock) is then pressed to stop one hand while the other continues moving. Then to bring them to together again, press the extra button. To stop both hands moving, press the crown, and again to return to zero.
This allows the user to record multiple time intervals that start at the same time but do not end together, for example race laps. The rattrapante chronograph is also sometimes referred to as a double chronograph or split-second chronograph.
The watch measures 52mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for London 1912, with a sponsor’s mark for the importer Arthur Baume of Hatton Garden, importer of watches.
Overall the case is in good condition, just three little indentations to the back, nothing too serious.
The watch glass is in lovely condition.
The dial is in beautiful condition with original pin-set hands. Two subsidiary dials, one for constant seconds and the other to record up to 30 minutes.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
