Pocket Watch Elgin USA 7 Jewel 10ct Gold Filled 1921 Antique Half Hunter FWO

Gentleman's original Antique Elgin (U.S.A) 7 jewel pocket watch in a highly polished 10 carat (professionally tested) gold filled (known in the UK as rolled gold) half hunter case which has the most wonderful bright Royal blue Roman numerals to front cover. It looks to have been much loved and very well cared for - her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! Dial:- Impressive and distinctive, high gloss 'ivory' porcelain dial in very near mint condition - absolutely no hairlines or nibbles and just one extremely tiny (micro) little 'spec' showing under eyeglass below number 10 which looks to be a fault in the original firing process (does not detract in any way but mentioning for accuracy). Signed clearly in bold, black enamel script; Elgin. Bold black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder 5 minute markers and triangular shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring. Recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut original blued steel correct double spade half hunter hands (so allowing for easy time check through the front cover) and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight, unmarked order. New hunter crystal and original outer domed glass both in clear, bright condition. Case:- The highly polished (5cm diameter / 7cm from top of bow to base), 10 carat (professionally tested) gold filled half hunter case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a hefty 107.6 grams), robust and in outstanding condition - absolutely no wear or indentations, few very light and fine little overall surface scratches and tiny 'freckles' to the inside covers (again showing under eyeglass) - all commensurate with age and use in her 103 years service. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. Beautifully decorated to the front cover with bold bright Royal blue enamelled Roman numerals (they are more commonly black) and Royal blue inner and outer chapter rings which are all in amazing condition with no wear, fading or chipping. The front cover is hinged at the nine position, opens correctly to exactly 90 degrees when the winder is depressed, closing tightly with a very reassuring click (always depress the winder when closing to save wear to the gold and also the catch) and the large hinge is true and firm with absolutely no play. Has one very tiny mark to the inside - looks like someone once tested it to see if solid gold. The back cover and dust cover again are hinged at the 9 position, both open correctly to exactly 90 degrees, closing with a very reassuring click and the hinges are true and firm. Clearly numbered to the inside of the back cover (in an unusual V shape); 1939575 and this is correctly, partially repeated to the back case cuvette; 39575. Elaborately stamped to the inside of the dust cover; Empress A.W.C.Co (American Watch Case Company), Case Made In Canada Guaranteed To Wear 10 Years and has their Royal Crown symbol to centre. Interestingly numbered; 1939390 - this should be the same as the outer cover, wonder if the Goldsmith at the case factory picked up the wrong dust cover ready to pin into position (numbers are not too far apart), we will never know. Movement:- The stem wound and set Elgin 7 ruby jewelled, 3/4 steel plate lever movement (Grade; 290, Model; 6, Class; 109, Model Run; 229 of 265, Size; 16) is in superb bright and clean order and as mentioned above has just been fully checked and serviced. Carries the most wonderful, slightly frosted geometric 'ribbon' engine turning to the top plates (repeated around the circumference of the bottom plate - always a sign of quality) which remains as crisp and clear today as the day they were made. Has a bi arm, bi metal expansion balance with brass balance screws and two brass meantime screws (for precision timing), blued steel overcoil balance spring (which has the correct Elgin V to the top coil and is true, in the round and 'breathing' well), ruby end stone and pallet jewels, micro regulator (which as mentioned earlier is sat correctly in the central position) fabulous 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and original, highly polished matching 'pyramid' case screws. Clearly stamped on the top plates in arched black enamel script; Elgin Nat'L Watch Co. U.S.A., and is numbered (again in arched, black enamel); 23739293 - dating her to 1921. The movement number is correctly repeated to the underside of the top plate and balance cock and to the top of the bottom plate. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action. Runs like a train! Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely large un-worn gold filled 'onion' crown. Good original firm totally un-worn big gold filled safety bow. Appraisal:- A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's Antique American half hunter timepiece which as mentioned above was much loved and very well cared for by the original owner (looks to have had very little use, perhaps only high days and holidays) - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations!
