Silver Kays “Challenge” pocket watch, 1923.
The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement, by Revue, which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for Birmingham 1923, together with a case maker’s mark for Aaron Dennison, a prolific case maker and supplier to various watch makers. The case is in good condition, just a little unevenness to the back.
The glass lens is in good condition.
The dial is signed Kay’s Keyless “Challenge”. William Kay set up Kays of Worcester in 1890. Customers bought items from handbills in a folder and initially the goods on offer were limited to household items, jewellery, clocks and watches such as this one. The goods were bought in and labelled with the Kays name. Eventually William’s son Jack took over the running of the business. The company continued to expand and trade successfully, becoming one of Worcester’s largest employers.
It is in lovely condition with blued steel hands (the minute hand is very slightly out of shape), a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
