This is stunning quality and very decorative French desk with matching chair dating from around 1880. The desk in solid mahogany, is in the Empire style beautifully adorned throughout with cast bronze ormolu mounts with incredible detail. This twin pedestal desk has solid mahogany turned Empire columns with mounts to all sides and the back is without doubt as impressive as the front with laurel wreath, anthemion and bronze rosette detail.
The tooled leather top is in excellent order and there is a tooled leather slide to the right hand side. The desk has a wide central drawer with matching drawers to either side and each pedestal has a bank of four drawers flanked by the handsome columns. There are three keys and all locks are in working order. The desk is raised on a substantial plinth decorated with gilt bronze stars beneath each column around the desk.
The matching chair is of the same high quality. It has curved arms, sabre back and smart turned front legs with ormolu decoration throughout. It has a wide comfortable seat with its original studded tapestry cloth all in good order.
A fine impressive and very practical piece in super order ready for service, the desk measures 77cm high, 160cm wide and is 90cm deep.
