19th Century ornamentally turned Ebony pill pot. The top depicts the bust of “Our Gracious Majesty...” carved in relief, and unscrews. The base depicts Napoleon III, the relief carving directly taken from the image on a bronze medal presented to the state of Kansas in 1867. The name of the sculptor can be seen (...well part of...) at the base of his neck.....H(ubert) Ponscarme. Quite why the original medal was awarded at the Paris International Exposition to Kansas is unsure, but it may have something to do with France’s support of their abolitionist movement. Some wear and a slight crack as per photos.
A very unusual item.
