fantastic quality princess beatrice.Industrial Victorian carpet art in history,extremely fine quality and rare antique carpet picture by crossley and sons,halifax,yorkshire .This type of carpet picture which were called mosaics were only produced for a short period of time between 1860-1879 by these famous makers.These carpet mosaics only came into being as a result of a german refuge by the name of Schubert working for crossleys to start up a dept that was referred to as the mosaic room,it seems Schubert came to crossleys with the invention,a means to reproducing pictures manufactured from worsted mohair threads,this example on offer was made from multiple coloured threads of the finest workmanship possible,the factory at this period copied many images from oil paintings and prints of queen Victoria"s children, the princesses and young Edward V11 (references.see book crossley mosaics by r.a.innes.1974)this mosaic picture or royal portraight depicts a young princess beatrice wearing fine clothing standing next to a carved giltwood embroided regency stool with claw feet,holding a large feathered hat,in the background a rich crushed red velvet curtain draped,and on the floor probably a crossleys pink ground patterned carpet,the vibrant colours are still in pristine condition,no fading and still under glass and housed in a shaped moulded rosewood frame and mounted.circa.1860s.overall size 72cm.x 88cm
