This is fabulous antique Asmalyk woven by the Yomut Turkman people in the East Caspian region dating from around 1900. The Asmalyk is hand woven in pure wool and would have been used across a horse or a camel, and would often be made specifically for a wedding, forming part of the bride's dowry This is one is very finely and skilfully woven in soft wools using only natural vegetable dyes and in fact the colour palette is very pleasing with deep indigo, madder red, ivory and a deeper cinnamon colour featuring. It has a smart geometric design of diamond lattice stepped serrated guls and narrow borders and guard stripes.
Amazingly for its age this is in really excellent condition; it has all of its ties and its many colourful woollen tassels.
This is a wonderfully tactile rug which can of course be used on the floor but also makes a stunning throw over a sofa or chest. It also would make a superb wall hanging.
