Welcome to chapmanpugh modern antiques. We sell antiques from the 17th to the 21st centuries that look good in modern and contemporary settings. We are particularly interested in pieces created by influential designers, manufacturers and furniture makers. We choose examples which we think are stylish and are interested in their place in history. We especially like antiques with a story attached. We also love the fact that by buying an antique piece of furniture, pottery, glass etc to use again, we are preserving our natural resources and preventing the environmental burden of another item being produced. This is why antiques are so wonderfully sustainable. New items are added on a regular basis. We ship to Europe, the United States and the Rest of the World.

Description
In General In the style of famed designer and producer, Franz Xavier Bergman, rare table lighter, Austrian cold painted Spelter camel group, c. 1930s. A rare and highly unusual table lighter, being an Austrian cold painted spelter group from Vienna of a camel and two Arabian carpet traders, made in the Art Deco period, dated c.1930s. The paint work is original - some examples we have seen have been over painted in bright colours which takes away from its lovely original patina and feel. This is a very good quality heavy piece and has been in the same family since the 1930s so it is 100% authentic. The camel and figures are raised on a heavy black glazed base. This sculptural group is rich with detail from the eye-catching geometric art deco decoration on the carpet to the decorative tassels on the camels reins to gold tassel on the red fez worn by the camel rider. The striker is thankfully present but does not strike as the flint is absent. Cold painting was a technique popular during the art deco period, which started in the 1920s. Spelter figures mainly made in Vienna were hand painted in enamel paint. Cold painted Austrian spelter figure groups depicting Arabs in tents or on camels were especially sought after. Franz Xavier Bergman (1861-1936) was the owner of a celebrated Viennese foundry who produced numerous beautiful patinated and cold painted bronzes. Year Early 20th century, art deco period, c.1930s. Designer, Maker and Marks Not known ands no marks shown - in the style of Franz Xavier Bergman. Material Cold painted Austrian spelter figure group. Condition This piece is in good antique condition and is structurally sound with no cracks or restoration. There are some paint losses mainly on the hats of the traders, the camel riders scarf and tunic, the camels tail and far side of the camels neck and tiny areas on the camels muzzle and eye brow. The single rein loops back over the camels neck and ends which is consistent with other examples which suggests that there has been no breakage. It was designed like this! There are two chips to the back front corner of the black glazed base. The wear is consistent with its age and use. Dimensions ( L x W x H ) 18cm x 8.5 cm x 19 cm or 7.08 inches x 3.34 inches x 7.48 inches. Weight 1.2 Kg or 2.64 pounds. Shipping We use trusted couriers in the UK and across the World.
