Description
A very good small silver cased aneroid desk or travel barometer altimeter and thermometer compendium by Wright & Davies, London c.1900.
Small travel aneroid barometer having 1¾” silvered and die struck tri-stepped dial, the outer bezel rotated altitude ring calibrated in feet with a range from 0 – 8,000ft divided down to 100ft, inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of Hg with a range from 23” - 31” divided down to 1/20th, the centre with general meteorological terms to upper part and semi-circular thermometer to lower part, the register calibrated in degrees Fahrenheit with a range from -10° - 130° divided to 2 degrees. Blued steel pointer, bevelled glass.
The movement of typical Vidie design driven from a single 1” nickel alloy capsule tensioned on a C spring, all set within a lacquered brass drum form inner case. Presented in its heavy silver hallmarked outer case.
Condition: Fully serviced, conserved, and calibrated under laboratory conditions. The movement working exceptionally well across the standard barometric scale greater drift noted at lower pressures a normal characteristic for instruments of this type and age. The dial about with minor marks visible in critical incident light, otherwise clean and vibrant. The silver case clean and essentially damage free, the hallmarks for silver clear and well struck.
Commments: A prized gift in its time and still as appropriate today, perhaps more so as an aesthetically attractive, intrinsically valuable, functioning and practical antique.
Quite hard to find now in this sort of condition. A collector’s or connoisseur’s item, and a wonderful and thoughtful gift.
