Description
A superb Victorian coromandel wood dressing case or toilet box by Grieves, the rising lid with gilded metal hinges and lid locking mechanism enclosing a crushed red velvet inner lid which has a vanity mirror on the reverse and drops down to reveal a secret compartment for letters and paper. There are 3 glass scent bottles and 7 other tidies all with silver plated monogrammed lids, complete set of mother of pearl and steel implements which lift out as a tray to reveal a section below for storage. The secret jewellery drawer below is released via a button and has an inset maker's plaque for H Greaves, 6 & 34 New Street, Birmingham and is lined in red velvet and has a front section for rings. The box comes with the original Bramah key and the lock works.
In over 40 years in the antique business I have seen dozens of toilet boxes but none as complete and virtually unused as this one. It is a time warp.

condition
Aside from a couple of very light scratches to the lid this box is in amazing condition. All glass is perfect. The plated lids aren't worn. The implements are in incredible condition like they have never been used. The velvet on lid and in drawer aren't worn. The leather linings are all excellent. The Bramah lock works.
All in all a remarkable time warp.
