The Old Roman Bridge, Oil Painting by Harry Foster Newey
A fine oil on board by Harry Foster Newey (1858-1933) depicting a Roman bridge in the New Forest. The scene beautifully captures a view under the bridge following the stream into the dappled woodland beyond. The work is a fine example of the exploration of light through trees. The painting is in excellent untouched condition and is signed ‘H Foster Newey’ to the lower left.
Harry Foster Newey was born in 1858 and studied at Birmingham School of Art. By the early 1880s he had moved to Harborne in Staffordshire and in the 1881 England and Wales census gave his occupation as Artist Designer and Modeller of Silver. In 1908 Newey was appointed Principal of Tunstall School of Art in Staffordshire, a post he held until 1908. From the 1880s he worked primarily as a landscape, figure and genre painter. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and was elected a full member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 1927.
This work is titled on the reverse and I think dated 1930. The solid oak frame is the original and works very well to highlight the painting. The whole is a wonderfully decorative work with a great impact.
