Description
Very rare 10½in Sestrel Marine Barometer by Henry Browne retailed by Jw Searby & Son Lowestoft c.1930s. Marine aneroid barometer having 7½" diameter painted dial with printed barometric scale in both inches and in millibars, the outer scale with a range of 950Mb - 1050Mb divided to 1Mb, the inner with a range of 28in - 31in, divided to 1/20th, and standard meteorological wording. The upper part of the dial marked with Henry Browne's "Sestrel" trademark, the lower part with retailer's details, "J.W. Searby & Son, Lowestoft," and "Compensated." The bottom of the dial marked with scale identification and "English Made Marine Barometer." Blued steel pointer, red painted index with brass knurled knob set in heavy bevelled glass contained within a brass bezel. Standard configuration movement driven from a single 2½in flux welded capsule tensioned on a C spring. The chassis fitted below the dial back plate with three stand-offs. The whole contained within a substantial spun and folded, high copper content lacquered brass case, flange bulkhead mounting, calibration port to verso. Condition: Fully serviced, conserved, and calibrated under laboratory conditions. The movement working exceptionally well with good sensitivity and progression, see performance chart. Clearly having been to sea, the dial with some spotting, the brass case with minor signs of salt corrosion. Comments: Antique and vintage marine aneroid barometers of such substantial diameter are scarce. This is a very attractive instrument with excellent functionality from a highly respected maker.
