Description
A very attractive 9ct gold Victorian compass bloodstone spinner, a charm, pendant or fob c.1890 Miniature compass having ⅝" diameter hand decorated dial showing cardinals and intercardinals, fleur de lys indicating north, arrow indicating magnetic north, compass rose decoration to centre. Flat needle on jewelled suspension, blue for north. Polished reflector ring under bevelled glass. Held in a gold stirrup surround, spinning or swivelling around two side mounts. The compass swinging freely and finding north easily, the glass with light marks. The bloodstone in very good condition, the gold surround with some marks. A beautiful pendant, charm or fob, this swivel piece is especially interesting for an error - when the dial was hand-decorated, the artist mistakenly put the arrow for magnetic north to the east of north rather than to the west. Magnetic north has been to the west of grid north from c1660 right up until 2014 when it moved to the east. I've shown an image of another almost identical Victorian compass dial with the arrow correctly pointing to the west, just for comparison. A super and useful gift!
