Description
This 19th Century (c.1870) Victorian antique camphorwood campaign trunk would have been purchased by a British officer who was in service in the Far East. These were made of camphorwood, a timber that gives off a beautiful perfume, that we adore but the insects and moths avoid. This meant the uniforms would not get attacked by these insects.
The trunk with the lifting lid that opens to reveal full storage inside. The exterior has brass straps to protect the chest as it was loaded onto wagons, carts, and ships. To each end is a brass carrying handle, so that the local helpers could carry it easily.
These Victorian camphorwood campaign trunks make great coffee tables and conversation pieces. They also can be used as great storage at the end of a bed or in an alcove or bay window.
It is always great when families come into my shop and a piece like this sparks people’s imaginations as to what campaigns these have been through. The thoughts of it being manhandled off wagons in remote outposts in India or other parts of the long-gone British Empire.
On occasions customers have been disappointed to miss an item as they e-mailed their enquiry instead of phoning, I would recommend that if you wish to get the piece, please call rather than e-mail. We are very friendly and easy to deal with.
This Victorian camphorwood campaign trunk is a green product and has not affected the environment we live in.
