Description
Please see my stock page for one of the largest selection of writing boxes available on this website.
Fine quality Moroccan leather writing box in very fine condition. Given the condition I think it fair to state that this box has had very little use by the many previous owners. Made by Fisher of 188 Strand, renowned for ‘quality items’ and situated at high end area of London from circa 1839 – 1900. The box is clearly stamped into the leather alongside the lock. There are of course some slight scuffing to the leather but it Is far less than the norm. Original stout brass handle. The lid closes perfectly square. Original hinges. Original lock, clearly stamped I Bramah 104 Piccadilly that dates the lock as pre 1871. (Key for decorative purposes only). The box opens to reveal an extremely impressive interior. The lid folds to provide a sloping writing surface. All of the leather and wood throughout the interior is in exceptional condition. Please note the crisp edges of the leather surrounding the apertures of the leather covered lock hasp. Twin sliding slope clasps with screw fixings rather than tapered brass pins secure the writing platform that opens to provide a storage section lined throughout with the original lacquered flame mahogany. The underside of the writing surface is covered with the original damask material with all of the webbing to retain notes/business cards etc in as perfect condition as you are likely to find. The leather on the writing surface in common with the two folding flaps to the front of the box are original and feature subtle embossed borders and corner features and an outer gilt embossed edging, all are more crisp/defined than most. Please note the condition of the pull tabs on all three lids…..a sure sign of little use. To the left of the flaps are three sections one of which accommodates a brass flip top inkpot in superb, virtually unused condition. It is possibly a replacement as the leather on the base is a different colour to that of the flaps but it fits perfectly. All of the ‘base’ section is lined throughout once again with lacquered sold mahogany…all in beautiful condition. To the underside of one flap is a storage envelope in perfect condition. Obviously unused. Lined with damask material. All stitching fully intact with the ‘flap’ still stiff due to little use. The underside of the other flap features 6 leather hops to retain various accessories. Almost certainly the letter opener is original as it is a perfect fit for the hoop and is clearly stamped ‘Fisher 188 Strand’ but the other accessories are I believe later additions. (Bone handles). It is difficult to date the box with complete confidence….I have seen similar that was dated c1855 but I have opted to date on the safer side. Regardless of date…. I do not generally purchase leather boxes but the names of Fisher and Bramah and the condition and quality of this particular item was impossible to resist.
Very Highly Recommended.
