This lovely, large Mid19th century English West Country Pine Settle, circa 1860, is an exquisite piece of English history, showcasing the craftsmanship and style of the Victorian era. Every element contributes to its distinctive character, and one can only imagine the tales it would tell if it had the power of speech.
The settle boasts a bow-shaped design with panelled construction, featuring a planked, curving high backrest that reaches down to the floor and has a canopy rail/narrow shelf across the top. The thick, curved seat sits above an enclosed base housing two deep drawers adorned with original white ceramic knobs, all framed by traditional, elegantly winged sides. These sides are shaped with scrolled arm terminals that rise upwards, integrating internal carved scroll armrests at each end. The settle is in excellent, sturdy condition, having developed a rich patina over the years.
Designed with a high back that extends to the floor and winged ends, it offers privacy and protection from drafts for those seated, while the flared base provides additional stability.
