Myles Birket Foster (RWS 1825-1899) was a painter, chiefly in watercolour,of landscape and rustic scenes in Surrey and elsewhere, peopled with children and milk maids; illustrator and engraver. Born in North Shields; came to London when he was five. Began as as a wood engraver under P.Landells when he was sixteen. Taught himself to paint in the 1850s and became a highly accomplished watercolourist. Travelled all over Europe and was admired by many leading artists of his day.
