Nils Hans Christiansen (1850-1922) was a Danish artist who specialised in winter landscapes and moonlight scenes and was interested in the effects of light, often painting the sunrise and sunsets against his native land. He is believed to have exhibited at many of the leading London galleries and in addition Christiansen also exhibited at his home country at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen where he became a member. His success brought him royal connections and he was given a Grace and Favour apartment at Windsor by Queen Victoria. By 1901 he became a British subject and moved to Plaistow West Ham where he lived until the end of his life.
