Valerie Thornton was born in London and after the war, studied at Byram Shaw School of Art and then Regent Street Polytechnic. She then spent several months as Sw Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris. She later taught at Charterhouse School and was a founding member of the Printmaker's Council. In 1970, she became a member of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers.
