Vincent Bennett - Artist

Vincent Bennett (1910 -1993) drew from an eclectic mix of influences from Byzantine Art to the Silent Cinema. Cubistic and Constructivist styles also informed his style. He originally trained at the Plymouth School of Art in 1920s alongside James Henry Cecil Collins (1908 - 1989) MBE who was an English Painter and printmaker originally associated with the Surrealist Movement with work held in the Tate. Following a move to London in 1930 he concentrated on scenery painting and also took part in in the occasional boxing match! Two years later he returned to Plymouth - painting murals around the City as well as establishing himself as a jazz drummer! In 1945 he married Mary Hemmingway who actively encouraged and facilitated his artistic career. Later in life he devoted himself to painting full time developing his own distinctive modern British, colourful, naïve and humorous style!
