Long before mains and battery-operated clocks could keep accurate time for us for months or years at a time, clocks had to be wound by hand. A simple weight driven mechanism usually only lasts a day or so meaning it was constantly being rewound. By the late 1600s spring and gear mechanisms could allow clocks to run for longer periods including 8 day and 30 days. These became the most popular and even continue to be produced to this day.
When it comes to choosing an antique or vintage 8-day clock there’s plenty of choice out there for you. From Mahogany or Oak mantel clocks to beautifully cut and pierced brass carriage clocks, 8-day clocks have been produced in many forms all around the world. Among the most classic are French and European examples with their Rococo scrolls and gilded brass work. In contrast English clocks are a bit more austere and simpler in design but often showcase classic geometric shapes. Either way, because 8-day clocks have been in production for hundreds of years there are plenty of 19th and 20th Century examples to choose from.
At LoveAntiques we have a fine selection of genuine antique and vintage 8-day clocks. You can be confident that each has been serviced and or checked by our reputable dealers.
