Designed to sit above a fireplace or similar, Overmantel mirrors have a flat bottom to allow them to sit in a stable position. Since a fireplace was usually an important focal point to most rooms, the Overmantel mirror was often the grandest mirror in the home to (quite literally) reflect the social standing of the owners. Being glass they were also intended to add light to the room as well as help reflect and radiate the rising heat from the fire. Often they were decorated in gilt with moulded or carved detail.
