Decent and indecent proposals

You want your marriage proposal to be one of the most romantic, memorable moments of your life. So seek inspiration from those who’ve been there before – and learn how NOT to do it too…

Most importantly, before you set the scene for your proposal, make sure you have a suitable engagement ring chosen for your beloved. Check out Love Antiques vintage engagement ring selection.

Smooth-talking Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) in the all-time epic Gone With the Wind proposes to feisty Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh) by saying: ‘I can’t go all my life waiting to catch you between husbands.’ The kiss that follows is movie gold.

Season two of TV favourite Downton Abbey closed with Lady Mary’s acceptance of Matthew’s proposal, after many an episode of romantic twisting and turning. Mary’s sleeveless dress was hardly ideal attire for the winter snow, but details, schmetails, she said she’d give it a go.

After pester power from six kids, who kept asking why their parents weren’t married ‘like Shrek and Fiona’, Brad Pitt asked Angelina Jolie to marry him in 2012. He’d collaborated with a jeweller for over a year, producing a quarter-of-a-million-buck, diamond beauty.

Will Smith describes proposing to long-term love Jada: ‘We were just lying there, going to sleep. I said: “Hey, we might be real good married. Wassup? You wanna marry me?” Unplanned. No ring. She said yes. When you live the kind of lifestyle we live, simplicity becomes the jewel.’ Before you go trotting out that line, be aware he followed up the minimalist proposal with a blinging ring.

Beware of sporting arena shame

There are those men who want to share their intimate moment with a vast, beer-swilling crowd at a football/baseball game. Be afraid. It’s a risky strategy and once the tannoy has stopped its ear-splitting crackle, you may end up with nothing but a slapped face and a fleeing fiancée-never-to-be.

With testosterone pumping at the prospect of marriage, it might be tempting for men to go down the ‘extreme proposal’ route. Before you go booking that mountain climb or dual jet ski to a remote island, bear in mind this hapless swain’s experience…

Londoner Mike Cooper, 32, says: ‘Last year, holidaying in Australia, I wanted to propose to my long-term girlfriend on a isolated clifftop. I thought it would be beautiful, but in reality, we both woke up with shocking hangovers on the morning I’d planned to do it. After a monstrous two-hour climb in the heat, we both felt sick, dizzy and dehydrated. Trying to recover the romance of the moment, I pulled the ring box from my pocket, but when I knelt down, I felt my knees slipping away from me and realised I was dangerously close to the edge of the sheer cliff. My girlfriend started screaming uncontrollably and to be honest, I did too. With her help, I managed to scramble back up again, but we were so shaken, I put the ring box away. I proposed again six weeks later in a nice, safe pizza restaurant back home and this time, she said yes.’

Don’t swallow the ring!

Food-based proposals can end in disaster too. It may seem a glorious gesture to embed the engagement ring in a heart-shaped muffin, or bury it in her trifle, but it’s a nerve-wracking business. Think about it. Do you really want to see thousands of pounds-worth of gems disappearing down her throat? It’s all too easy for that to happen, especially if you’ve chosen a bride with a healthy appetite. Recovering the ring as it passes through the system hours later is not the way you want to start married life.

Finally, heed the warning of one hapless wannabe fiancé who asked his girlfriend, by way of proposing an autumn wedding: ‘How much weight do you think you can lose by September?’ His tactless approach won her hand – but only when she slapped his face.
