Description
In the 19th Century geometrically designed oak coffers are beautiful examples of craftsmanship from a time when geometric motifs became a popular form of decorative expression. These coffers, also known as chests or trunks, were typically handcrafted from solid oak, valued for its durability, grain, and deep, rich colour that grows darker with age.
Just beneath the lid you can see the dentil moulding forming part of the design and finer detailing often associated with with these geometrically design coffers. The sides have flat panels with a cornice trim three quarters up from the bottom cirice trim forming a upper and lower skirt around the sides and front.
The half-pilaster moldings carved and affixed to chests, especially on 19th-century coffers, are often referred to as applied pilasters or applied half-columns. These decorative elements mimic the look of architectural pilasters (flattened columns projecting slightly from a wall) and were typically added to give the chest an elegant, architectural feel. They might also be described as fluted pilasters or reeded pilasters if they have vertical grooves or linear patterns.
These decorative elements were frequently used in chests and furniture influenced by Neoclassical and Gothic Revival styles, lending a sense of sophistication and symmetry to the pieces. By using half-pilasters, craftsmen could add depth and create the impression of structural support, even though the pilasters were purely ornamental.
A very well constructed piece of useful storage furniture with the remains of the lock although now no key, which is often the case.
