Description
A storyboard of life painted in the 19th Century...
In the 19th century, European painted folk art screen room dividers were popular decorative and functional pieces used in homes across Europe. These screens typically consisted of multiple hinged panels that could be folded to stand upright, creating portable walls to divide a space or add privacy. They also showcased the period's craftsmanship and folk art traditions, with each screen reflecting the culture and artistic style of its region.
The level of detail to the painted screen room or divider is quite remarkable. With Hand-Painted Motifs, these panels were often adorned with hand-painted scenes and motifs, using techniques passed down through generations. These designs could range from pastoral scenes, nature-inspired patterns (such as flowers, birds, and animals), to more whimsical and symbolic folk art motifs. This particular example highlights the European dress style typical of the region.
Each hinged panel is hand painted with flowers vines and folk with their finest regalia. The panels have been cut with an interesting fretwork design allowing the owner some privacy whilst allowing the light to shine through, creating an interesting balance of light and subtle views through the fretwork design.
