Description
Gentleman's large and highly impressive original Antique Swiss 'Cyma' high grade 15 jewel pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a very chunky 18 size, silver nickel highly polished (mirror finish) hermetic case with Lincolnshire interest.
Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of - her condition certainly reflects this.
Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper with plenty of room on the regulator for any further fine tuning.
Fully checked, serviced and a new mainspring fitted by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection!
Dial:-
Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, 'snowflake' white porcelain dial in very near mint condition - absolutely no hairlines, just two extremely tiny pin prick black 'specs' showing under eyeglass only which look to be a fault in the original firing process and very small edge of dial 'nibble' near the 9 position which is not visible with the bezel on (so minute is not showing up in the photographs, but mentioning for accuracy).
Big black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder black 5 minute markers and 'diamond' shaped black 15 minute markers to chapter ring.
Large recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters.
Finely cut, original very bright blued steel spade and whip hands and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order.
New old stock very thick bevel edge, slightly domed glass (not acrylic and will be as old as the watch) in clear and bright condition.
Case:-
The highly polished and very chunky silver nickel large 18 size hermetic case (5.6cm diameter / 7.8cm from top of bow to base, 1.6cm depth) is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a hefty 120.7 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - absolutely no indentations or wear and just a few very light little overall surface scratches commensurate with age and use in her 100+ years service.
These robust silver nickel cases where favoured by the Railway men for their strength and durability.
All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish.
The front bezel and back cover screw on and off correctly (hermetic), closing tightly (early form of waterproofing) and I have taken the liberty of oiling the threads for years of continued smooth operation.
Has an attractive, slightly raised (and totally un-worn) coin edge to the front bezel making for an easy grip.
The back cover carries to centre (in feint script) the original owners name and address which has been lovingly engraved by hand; Mr Stan Payne Weston Ln Spalding Lincolnshire.
Carries the most wonderful 'fish scale' engine turning to the inside (the detail of which remains as crisp and clear today as the day it was made) and is clearly numbered; 953820 9111092, carries two service marks - the older one looks to be dated; 1/69 (January 1969) and the recent one by my longstanding watch repairer; 8/24 (August 2024).
The back case curvette is numbered; 180.
Movement:-
The stem wound and set high grade 15 ruby jewelled, 3/4 plate Swiss lever movement is in superb clean and bright order (tiny bit of overall patina showing under eyeglass as to be expected) and as mentioned above has just been checked/serviced by my highly experienced watch maker.
Carries very attractive 'wavy' engine turning to the top and bottom plates - always a sign of quality.
Has a solid bi-arm balance wheel with brass balance screws and two brass meantime screws (for precision timing), steel over coil balance spring which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well, ruby jewels in sunken chaton settings, ruby end stone, ruby pallet jewels, 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and original, matching highly polished steel case screws.
Stamped clearly on the top plates; Swiss Made
and attractively stamped around the mainspring barrel cover in very fancy script **Cyma***.
Stamped to the bottom plate (side of the balance assembly); Brev.S.D.G.D and numbered to top side (under the dial); Ref.971 17162729.
This number is correctly, partially repeated to the underside of the balance cock; 29.
Balance action is tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train.
Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!)
Runs for well over 30 hours on a full wind.
Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true.
Lovely original brass 'onion' crown which has some wear to the fluting commensurate with age and use.
Good original un-worn, (fairly firm) large bow.
Appraisal:-
A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's top grade Swiss Railway type timepiece which as mentioned earlier was much loved and proudly cared for by the original owner - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations!
Ready to wear or display.
Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
