Georgian Blue & White "Gothic Castle" Hot Water Plate

This is a good early 19th Century English Georgian antique blue & white transfer indented pottery hot-water plate, {Spode Shape No. S131}, potted by Spode at their Spode Works, Stoke, Staffordshire. Printed in a medium blue palette with the 'Gothic Castle' pattern, unmarked, but this recognized as being one of the few of Spode's patterns so issued. Hot-Water plates were designed to keep an invalid's food warm whilst enjoying a meal, and can be found, although with some difficulty today, decorated in a variety of Spode patterns.
