Original Oil on Board 'Coastal Scene' by Doreen Heaton (1930-2014) Provenance; The Artist c.1975

Like many artists of the period Doreen painted on pieces of discarded wood and objects found on the beach. This oil painting is on a piece of driftwood and has been finished on the exposed edges. She knew Margaret Mellis whose paintings typify this approach to painting. Doreen was born in 1930 and attended the Bath Academy of art at Corsham from 1949-53. At that time the Academy was at the fore front of modern thinking in terms of art education and trends. After her scholastic period she travelled widely in France, Italy and Spain. It was while attending Corsham, she came under the teaching influence of Peter Potworowski, one of the great Polish abstract painters of the 20th Century. They became lovers and when he returned to Poland in the mid 1950s she went with him. After his death in 1962 she returned to England and had a one woman show at the Drian Galleries in London. In her introduction to the exhibition Halima Nalecz says “her instinct as a painter leads to an almost childish honesty of expression. But it is this quality which makes her work valuable and beautiful for us”.
