Description
Gentleman's large and highly impressive antique 'Nirvana' (rare 'Non Magnetic'), Swiss 7 jewel pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a very chunky 18 size Silverore (silver nickel) hermetic case with Yorkshire interest.
Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of - her condition certainly reflects this.
Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning.
Fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection!
Dial:-
Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, 'snowflake' white porcelain dial in very near mint condition - absolutely no marks or nibbles and just two very feint hairlines; from centre - 2 and centre - 9 respectively (both only visible under eyeglass, do not detract but mentioning for accuracy).
Signed clearly in bold black very fancy script; Nirvana Non Magnetic
and partially signed in black arched script (very rubbed) to base of sub dial; Swiss Made.
Big black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder black 5 minute markers and 'diamond' shaped black 15 minute markers to chapter ring.
Large sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters.
Finely cut, original big bright blued steel spade and whip hands and blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order.
Original very thick bevel edge glass (not acrylic) in amazingly clear and bright condition with some overall little surface scratches and one small 'flea nibble' to bevel edge commensurate with age.
Case:-
The highly polished and very chunky silver nickel large 18 size hermetic case (5.6cm diameter / 8.1cm from top of bow to base, 1.6cm depth) is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a hefty 131.7 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - absolutely no wear or indentations and just a few very light (micro) little overall surface scratches commensurate with age and use in her 100+ years service.
These robust silver nickel cases where favoured by the Railway men for their strength and durability.
All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish.
The front bezel and back cover screw on and off correctly (hermetic), closing tightly (early form of waterproofing) and I have oiled the threads for years of continued smooth operation.
Has an attractive slightly raised (and totally un-worn) coin edge to the front bezel making for an easy grip.
The back cover is beautifully stamped in arched script (within fancy banner shaped cartouches); Nirvana W.Co. Swiss Genuine Silverore and is clearly numbered; 2904 10 and carries seven old service marks (certainly looks to have been very well maintained) two of which look to be dated; 50 (1950) and 57 (1957).
The case number is correctly, partially repeated to the back case curvette; 10.
Also has been feintly hand engraved with the original owners name and a date; John Garity, Church Street, Rawmarsh, Yorks. 1924.
Movement:-
The stem wound and set 7 ruby jewelled, 3/4 plate Swiss lever movement is in clean and bright order and as mentioned above has just been checked/serviced by my highly experienced watch maker.
Carries very attractive 'geometric' and 'swirl' engine turning to the top plates - the detail of which remains as crisp and clear today as the day they were made.
Has a solid bi-arm balance with brass balance screws and two brass meantime screws (for precision timing), steel flat balance spring which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well, ruby end stone, ruby pallet jewels, 'swirl' engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and steel case screws.
Stamped clearly on the top plates in arched slightly faded gold script; Nirvana 7 Jewels and is numbered; 463258.
Stamped to the bottom plate (under the balance assembly) in arched script; Swiss Made.
Correctly numbered to the bottom plate (under the dial) with a partial repeat of the main movement number; 258 and to the underside of the balance cock; 58.
Balance action is tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train.
Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!)
Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true.
Lovely original crisp big 'onion' crown.
Good original large bow which has a micro bit of wear to top underside only from being carried on a watch chain over the years.
Appraisal:-
A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's Swiss Railway type timepiece which as mentioned earlier was much loved and proudly cared for by the original owner John Garity - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations!
Ready to wear or display.
Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
