Description
Please see my stock page for one of the largest selection of jewellery boxes available on this website.
Mid Victorian fine quality inlaid coromandel jewellery box made by Farthing & Thornhill 42 Cornhill (inlaid plaque to that effect to the box interior). The company enjoyed a trading history for circa 1740-1900, held Royal Warrants and exhibited at Paris and London major exhibitions. The box is veneered with coromandel, one of the most expensive veneers and tended to feature as the main veneer targeted for the high end of the market. Such was the cost that is often was only applied to the top and front of boxes. This particular example features coromandel to all exterior surfaces. All is original and complete. Original inlaid oval mother of pearl cartouche and escutcheon. The lid closes perfectly square. Original hinges and lock with a replacement working key supplied. The lid interior features the original mirror within the original silk covered frame all free of tears. The mirror does have age related imperfections due some loss of silvering. The panel can be released via the original swing clasp to the top centre to give access to a ‘love letter’ storage envelope. Both side folds are fully intact with the envelope best described as being in unused condition. The base section has the original tray comprising of 24 sections. All dividers are original, all material free of tears. There was originally lids to a couple of the mid sections. All pull tabs are original and still fully intact! Original side brass hoop handles. Open storage beneath the tray with all of the original lining complete. The box was originally made to serve as a sewing/work box but nowadays the majority of the type of box are put to good modern day use as a jewellery box. The many small sections within the tray is ideal for those smaller items of jewellery and the open section beneath the tray ideal for those large items. A fine quality item that aside from the replacement working key is 100% original and obviously a box that has had very little use by the many generations of previous owners. Very high degree of original features, quality maker and condition makes for a sound investment piece.
Highly Recommended.
